49ers’ Trey Lance has successful surgery to repair broken ankle

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Trey Lance had surgery Monday morning at Stanford Hospital to repair the broken ankle he suffered in the first quarter of a 27-7 win over the Seahawks on Sunday, the team announced.

Lance’s procedure repaired a broken fibula and “ligament disruption.” Lance’s ankle injury reportedly included a dislocation. The 49ers’ head physician, Dr. Tim McAdams, is confident Lance will recover completely before the start of the 2023 season.

Lance, via Twitter, posted a picture Monday afternoon in which he’s smiling in his hospital bed with a large cast on his right leg. Wrote Lance: “Truly appreciate all of the messages and prayers. Surgery was a success and I am ready to attack this rehab process. We will never understand why, but I trust that it’s all a part of His plan. I will be back better than ever. This chapter is going to make the story even greater!”

Lance’s injury is similar to the broken right ankle Dallas quarterback Dak Prescott suffered Oct. 11, 2020, although Prescott’s injury included a compound fracture. Prescott was medically cleared by the start of training camp about nine months later.
